
The argument between the design school that advocates pressing a record against the bearing and those that focus on the complete opposite approach rivals some of the more vivid religious schisms in human history (and, as a true fence sitter, I use and enjoy examples of both schools of thought). The Newton Clamp is Titanic Audio’s take on a non-threaded weight, and they describe it as suitable for all turntable designs.
The engineering that goes into the Newton is deceptively rigorous; it isn’t simply a smartly dressed bit of mass that sits as dead weight on the record. Key to its operation is the presence of no less than ten spring-loaded ball bearings on the underside of the body. These serve as the point of contact between the Newton and the record itself, concentrating the weight at these points. The claim is that this is the perfect amount of force, perfectly distributed.
Not too dense
At 383g, the Newton is solid and has helped with some minor warps, but it is not as dense as some models I’ve tested over the years, which I personally prefer to avoid putting too much extra weight on the bearing. It’s also exquisitely made. It is an aluminium monocoque with carbon fibre inserts and a pair of rubber rings around the upper edge that provide a firm grip when lifting it off the platter. It’s a lovely thing, and I wager at least one will find a home as an exquisite executive paperweight.
The vast majority will earn a living as record weights, and they’ll do a fine job of it. Replete with its new LEVI feet, I pressed it into service on my Michell GyroDec in place of the screw clamp. Its first test was a copy of Jamiroquai’s Travelling Without Moving [Sony], which has a warp severe enough on record one to ensure that the opening ‘Virtual Insanity’ can’t be tracked by the cartridge without the clamp in place. While the Newton can’t get the record as flat as the clamp can, it enables full play of the record.

Using the Newton on flat records is considerably more beneficial. Listening to Dead Can Dance’s Spiritchaser [4AD] with the Newton instead of the clamp is intriguing. There is a slight reduction in bass extension, but the trade-off is an airiness in the midrange and treble that is more profound than I anticipated from a weight. Suddenly, ‘Song of the Stars’ takes on an almost cinematic scale, achieved without any loss of the timing and drive that the track needs to work.
Fundamentalist mass
Running the same album on a Rega Planar 10—a turntable from a manufacturer at the fundamentalist end of the ‘no mass on the bearing’ argument—is less clear-cut. I found that detail improves a little, and there is a slight but relatively consistent increase in bass extension. Here, though, the same airiness that the Newton brought to the Gyro is rather less apparent. Titanic’s claim that you can use the Newton on any turntable is true as far as it goes, but it’s not a panacea.
On turntables that benefit from a bit of mass on the bearing, the Newton is a deeply impressive piece of equipment. The delicacy it possesses is particularly notable; there were moments when it made the Gyro’s screw clamp feel like a blunt instrument. The fact that it’s a genuinely lovely object in its own right won’t hurt its prospects either. This is a very clever weight and well worth seeking out.
