HIFISTAY Sound Wings+

HIFISTAY Sound Wings+

The South Korean company HIFISTAY specialises in what it calls the ‘Keystone of your music’. The idea is that, by the time you get to HIFISTAY, you are fine-tuning an already highly tuned system. We examined the company’s Absolute Point equipment feet in Issue 231, and the Stella spike shoes five issues later. Having addressed resonance issues in audio electronics and loudspeakers, it’s now the cable’s turn, and for that, we need HIFISTAY’s Sound Wings+ cable risers.

Like the other tuning components in the range, the HIFISTAY Sound Wings and Sound Wings+ are exceptionally well-crafted. We selected Sound Wings+ because it features a new Soundrest and Hybrid Mass Damper designed to accommodate nearly any cable. Sound Wings+ offers even better vibration control, but that benefit mainly applies to heavy or stiff cables that need Sound Wings+ anyway.

Construction

HIFISTAY’s Sound Wings feature three circular ‘swing’ bases, each separated by three ceramic balls to serve as vibration control. The top ring has two threaded holes for holding metal uprights, a long pole, and a shorter one with insets carved into it for the silicone bands. These uprights have a small, removable threaded insert; nearly any configuration is possible for the listener. Sound Wings+ adds a stainless steel Hybrid Mass Damper in the base for additional resonance damping.

The Soundrest is a small, Delrin dumbbell-shaped part with a silicone band passing through its centre. As the name indicates, it adds extra mass to the standard silicone band.

The stated aim of the HIFISTAY Sound Wings+ is resonance control, but it also fulfils other ‘cable riser’ functions. It offers excellent cable management, not only for loudspeaker cables. Placed behind a component on a table, it can organise interconnect cables and ensure power cords remain at 90° to signal cables. Additionally, they help reduce static build-up.

But it’s resonance control where these devices excel. This is not about avoiding or redirecting resonance. Instead, by preventing stray interaction with the floor, any potential resonance is significantly diminished.

Getting meta all the time

The performance of a cable lifter is inherently ‘meta’. Instead of having specific performance parameters, something like a HIFISTAY Sound Wings+ more accurately reflects the cables it supports. Yes, it offers a slightly quieter, blacker background and more space around the instruments overall, but certain performance aspects are more aligned with the cable than the cable riser… which is as it should be. Use it with Cardas Clear, and it accentuates more of those Cardas qualities—effortless balance and clarity without harshness. Swap it for Oephi and you experience a bit more Oephiness; increased detail and precision, along with greater musical insight. And so on… except for Nordost Odin 2 loudspeaker cables, which, like all flat cables, won’t fit!

Yes, the HIFISTAY Sound Wings+ offers subtle improvements that depend on an already very well-selected and optimised system, but clear enhancements can be observed. Cable risers are not about major tonal shifts, more detail, or significant improvements in dynamic range. Things are just slightly clearer, as might be expected from fine-tuning a well-configured system. And they also look stylish! Whether you want to explore the performance of cable risers or give your system a bit of an upgrade, try the Sound Wings+. You might be pleasantly surprised.
