AURALiC VEGA S1
AURALiC introduced its entry-level S1 series at the 2024 Munich High-End show. The S1 promised a significant proportion of the company’s higher-end model performance and features in a more affordable, yet functional, chassis. The VEGA S1 from the new line boasts capabilities like Direct Data Recording to minimize jitter, various inputs (coaxial, Toslink optical, USB), and upsampling. New features include a Tone Mode for adjusting sound clarity or warmth. The unit’s glass screen displays track details and can be controlled via a smartphone app or IR remote. With the onboard power supply, the VEGA S1 performs well, demonstrating excellent timing and definition in sound. However, upgrading to the S1 Purer-Power PSU greatly enhances audio quality.
Supremely engaging
Jason Kennedy’s initial findings were that the S1 on its own “delivered a supremely engaging result, maybe not the richest in detail or tonal terms, but superbly timed with excellent definition.” As he further explored the VEGA S1’s performance, he became ever more impressed with the way it played music he knew well; “I usually listen to this excellent music on the record player; I had no idea a streamer could deliver it so effectively, let alone one at such a reasonable price.’
Moving over to the VEGA S1 with its optional power supply, Jason said that, “it felt like the data had doubled, and the amount of musical information coming through gave the impression of moving from a cartoon to a colour photograph.” He concluded by saying, “AURALiC is to be congratulated on the VEGA S1; in terms of features, build and sound quality, it represents a benchmark at its price point.”
