Benchmark Music Systems DAC3 B

Benchmark Music System’s DAC3 B is not new. It doesn’t support ‘bleeding-edge’ connections or digital formats. If you want to play the two tracks of dubious provenance that you own in super-high-resolution Octa-DSD, then you need to look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you want a solid, no nonsense, studio-derived, affordable DAC that is built like a tank (without weighing as much as a battleship), look no further than the Benchmark Music Systems DAC3 B. It has longevity on its side; when launched, it was criticised for not jumping on the MQA bandwagon. MQA is barely a footnote now, and the DAC3 B is still on sale, turning in a good performance for those wanting just a damn good DAC that supports S/PDIF, optical and USB, outputs to balanced and single-ended amps and has a no-frills approach to audio replay.

Intrinsically constant

The DAC3 B is a good standalone DAC, but really came into its own when used with the company’s LA4 preamp. Regardless, the Benchmark’s intrinsic character remains constant. “This is a DAC that’s uniformly good at everything,” remarked Alan Sircom in his review, adding that “Vocals are articulate and project well, standing proud of the image if that’s in the mix. There’s a good sense of dynamic range too.” He concluded the review, stating, “The Benchmark Music Systems DAC3 B isn’t the DAC for fireworks or showing off your system. Instead, it makes a balanced, honest sound that allows you to sit and listen to music for hours.” That’s why it’s the darling of the proaudio world.

AURALiC VEGA G2.2

AURALiC’s VEGA G2.2 is the current flagship DAC in AURALiC’s lineup. The VEGA G2.2 uses AURALiC’s Tesla G3 architecture and acts as a DAC, streaming device, and analogue preamplifier. It includes an innovative data buffering system called Direct Data Recording (DDR), which enhances its performance by managing data fluctuations and minimising distortion and jitter. Its hybrid Fusion DAC architecture combines discrete ladder and Delta-Sigma designs for superior audio processing. The onboard preamp features an analogue resistor ladder for precision and noise reduction, and the DAC offers an impressive array of connection options, including AES, coaxial, USB, and multiple HDMI ports. It also benefits from AURALiC’s sophisticated Unity Chassis II to keep RFI, EMI and vibration at bay.

Clean, open presentation

Jason Kennedy was impressed by the VEGA G2.2 in our recent test. He felt that “The VEGA has a clean, open presentation that solidifies stereo imaging and projects voices well into the room with the right record,” Adding that “I love the way that the VEGA is fast enough to define the attack and decay of each note without blurring the transients, it has excellent low-level resolution thanks to all the efforts to keep noise at bay, and this brings a degree of focus and clarity to the results that makes you want to play more.” He concluded the review by saying, “As a dedicated digital-to-analogue converter, it is very difficult to beat the combination of features, building quality and sonic capability that it offers at the price.”
