Synergistic Research PowerCell 8 SX

Mains (or AC) treatment is a crucial part of the Synergistic Research portfolio, and the range is extensive. It reaches up to the Galileo flagship at nearly thirty thousand pounds. Galileo has proven very effective as a testbed for technology and ideas. These have subsequently filtered down to the rest of the range.

This means that the PowerCell 8 SX is both more affordable and compact. It’s an eight-socket device that uses the company’s EM cells to ‘project an electromagnetic field that filters out and redirects contaminants, allowing a combination of the proper signal and mechanical energy to pass.’ On a more practical level, these cells function as supercapacitors. They provide a clean and stable power supply that safeguards against brief power dips in the mains. The review sample actually demonstrated this function during testing. It kept connected components powered while my router lost electricity.

New design

These cells feature a new design, the first such revision in many years, and will appear in an upcoming flagship model. They have an increased surface area for greater conditioning power compared to previous folded EM Cells. Along with significant improvements in internal materials and assembly processes, Synergistic Research states that performance is markedly enhanced. They also feature a reformulated Ultra Low-Frequency RF bias and a redesigned ground plane.

Like the PowerCell 12 SX I examined in issue 225, the PowerCell 8 SX uses a proprietary mains connection for its inlet cable. It comes with a Foundation SX as standard. However, you can upgrade to various models from the Synergistic Research range for this purpose. These cables are, in themselves, additional treatment devices. They often incorporate the company’s carbon fibre tuning modules.

Something that often gets overlooked amid the flurry of references to Schumann frequencies and other peculiar engineering details is that the PowerCell 8 SX features genuinely tidy packaging. It manages to fit eight mains sockets into a chassis. This chassis is just over 30 centimetres wide and 12 centimetres high.

Four sockets

The top four sockets are inverted over the lower set. This makes it entirely possible to connect eight substantial mains cables to the back of the PowerCell 8 SX. As a result, everything does not become hopelessly congested.

The gap between the lower sockets and the surface on which the PowerCell 8 SX rests is ideal for cables exiting the back of the socket to work most effectively. However, it’s still possible to use downward-exiting cables. The build quality remains excellent, even considering the asking price.

I allocated a system’s worth of components to the PowerCell 8 SX, transferring them from the resident PowerGrip YG-3 (a conditioner that is more prosaic in appearance and claims), one at a time. The primary and most important function of the PowerCell 8 SX was to ensure that nothing I connected sounded worse. Since two of the devices I transferred were a Chord Electronics Hugo TT2 and Mscaler on their supplied switch-mode power supplies, this is quite an achievement. This is especially notable considering some mains treatment has previously caused issues with them. When used on the PowerGrip, they operate with the filtering switched off. Here, they sustain their outstanding soundstage and tonal realism. There is no perceptible compromise on the dynamics.

Clear improvement

In the case of the Cambridge Audio Edge A integrated amp that also moves over, there is a clear improvement in the performance on offer. Listening to the magnificent new compilation, The Making of Five Leaves Left [Harvest], which gathers a wide selection of Nick Drake recordings leading up to his debut album, reveals subtle but noticeable improvements to Drake’s vocals once the Edge A has been transferred. What’s quite clever about this is that the impression isn’t of the vocals being artificially boosted. Instead, they are better defined against the rest of the material.

The most noticeable difference is on the Cambridge recordings. These aren’t ‘hifi’ in any traditional sense, but they are of great importance to Drake fans. The PowerCell 8 SX does not change its fundamental character. Instead, it becomes more intelligible and easier to follow. Even when the amp is fed the sublime 88.2kHz rip of Dead Can Dance’s Toward the Within [4AD], it still sounds richer and more vibrantly ‘live’ when running on the Powercell 8SX.

Vinyl also takes a significant step forward. The Cyrus Phono Signature and Unitra GSH-630 combination I used were already quiet, so the reduction in noise floor isn’t very noticeable. However, there are clear improvements in bass definition and control. When using the Unitra with both the pre-installed Ortofon 2M Bronze and one of the new Ortofon MC 20X moving coil cartridges, the potent Supernature by Goldfrapp [BMG] shows a greater muscularity. Importantly, this doesn’t sacrifice timing or articulation.

Life on the edge

When combined with the benefits that the Edge A offers, the result is a more lively performance without sounding forced or unnatural. The effect of the PowerCell 8 SX is primarily to enhance the qualities of your system’s equipment. This means it has limitations if you want to correct issues with your existing gear. However, if you are satisfied with the overall balance, it provides a way to get more out of that system.

This should also be viewed as a compact and practical piece of equipment. The PowerCell 8 SX has enough sockets to support most home configurations without difficulty. The device itself doesn’t require much space or draw much attention while in use. Even when compared to the formidable PowerCell 12 SX I tested, this feels like a true sweetspot in engineering. It is likely to perform well across various systems.
